The State Audit Institution, which represents the advisory body of the Government of Serbia, presented the results of a research, according to which Serbia has a large biomass energy potential that is insufficiently used. If it were to be developed as a renewable source, it could be an alternative to standard energy sources.
According to estimates, more than 30% of the total potential of wood biomass is not used, while even 98% of the potential of agricultural biomass is not used.
More biomass that would replace standard energy sources would also influence the increase of energy security in Serbia. All the audited entities, the Ministry of Mining and Energy, the Provincial Secretariat for Energy, the cities of Bor and Pirot, and the municipalities of Ruma and Bajina Basta, received recommendations to make the use of biomass more massive and efficient. They were also given deadlines to fulfill their obligations.
The Ministry and the Secretariat were recommended to draft by-laws.
Pirot was recommended to continue with the implementation of of the project of the introduction of biomass in the production of heat energy.
Ruma was ordered a study of the potential of renewable energy sources for its territory.
Apatin, which has exeeded the deadline for the construction of the storage for biomass, was recommended to bring the facility to its intended purpose.
